Choosing an ambulance involves more than selecting a vehicle

The right configuration depends on the intended medical service, operating conditions, onboard equipment, number of crew members, required working space and available budget.

One of the first decisions is whether to choose a Type I ambulance or a Type II ambulance. Both can be configured for professional prehospital care, but they differ in vehicle architecture, interior capacity, maneuverability and investment.

This guide explains those differences and the factors that should be considered before purchasing an ambulance in Mexico.

Before we begin: Type I and Type II do not replace Mexico’s regulatory classification

The terms Type I and Type II primarily describe the vehicle platform and architecture used to manufacture the ambulance.

Mexico’s NOM-034-SSA3-2013, on the other hand, regulates prehospital medical services and identifies terrestrial ambulances for:

  • patient transport;
  • basic emergency care;
  • advanced emergency care;
  • intensive care.

Vehicle configuration and clinical function are therefore related decisions, but they are not equivalent.

A Type II unit, for example, is not necessarily limited to basic care. Its service level depends on its design, equipment, personnel and compliance with the requirements applicable to the requested configuration.

What is a Type I ambulance?

A Type I ambulance is generally built on a cab chassis, with an independent patient-care module installed behind the cab.

Within the Oregon product line, Aquila represents this configuration. It is designed for operations requiring greater interior capacity, equipment, visibility and durability.

What operations can benefit from a Type I ambulance?

A Type I ambulance may be appropriate for:

Its main advantage is space. However, the organization must also consider its higher investment, larger exterior dimensions and the routes, parking areas and maintenance facilities where it will operate.

What is a Type II ambulance?

A Type II ambulance is built inside the original body of a van. Its medical area can be integrated into platforms such as the RAM Promaster, Ford Transit or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

Oregon manufactures two principal models in this category: Génova, focused on functionality and operating efficiency, and Oregon, which offers a more complete and highly equipped configuration.

  • Conversion completed inside a van body.

A Type II ambulance can be a strong option for:

  • medical transport operators;
  • prehospital care services;
  • medical practices and outpatient centers;
  • industrial facilities;
  • event medical coverage;
  • urban emergency services;
  • public and private fleets;
  • frequent transport between medical facilities.

Its primary advantage is the balance between space, equipment, mobility and investment.

Main differences between Type I and Type II ambulances

Vehicle platform

A Type I ambulance uses a cab chassis and an independent patient-care module. A Type II ambulance retains the original van body and converts its interior into a medical compartment.

Interior space

A Type I generally provides more volume and layout flexibility. A Type II offers a more compact environment that can be used efficiently through purpose-designed cabinetry and components.

Maneuverability

A Type II is usually easier to operate in city streets, parking facilities and areas with limited space.

A Type I provides greater capacity, but its larger dimensions must be evaluated against its planned routes and operating locations.

Equipment

Both configurations can incorporate electrical systems, lighting, medical oxygen, climate control, cabinets and medical equipment.

The principal difference is the amount of space available and the capacity required for the intended operation.

Investment

A Type II usually provides a more controlled initial investment. A Type I may require a higher budget because of its chassis, independent module, material volume and equipment level.

The final price does not depend solely on the ambulance type. It is also affected by the platform, clinical function, medical equipment, electrical systems, climate control, finishes and customization.

Which one is better?

There is no universally better category. The correct choice depends on how the ambulance will operate.

Choose a Type I when:

  • maximum interior space is required;
  • the unit will carry a significant amount of equipment;
  • it will support critical or specialized operations;
  • additional storage is necessary;
  • vehicle presence and robustness are priorities;
  • its routes can accommodate a larger vehicle.

Choose a Type II when:

  • urban maneuverability is important;
  • initial investment and operating cost must be controlled;
  • the unit will perform frequent patient transport;
  • it will operate around hospitals, clinics, plants or cities;
  • the organization wants to standardize a fleet;
  • a compact, professional and configurable unit is required.

Génova, Oregon or Aquila?

Oregon offers three alternatives for different operating requirements.

Génova

A functional and efficient Type II ambulance. It is intended for organizations that need a reliable unit for patient transport, basic care and daily operation with a controlled investment.

Oregon

A more complete and highly equipped Type II ambulance. It can include dual climate control, advanced control systems and a configuration prepared for hospitals, medical operators and institutions with frequent usage.

Aquila

A Type I ambulance for more demanding operations. It provides more room, capacity and configuration possibilities for critical emergencies, specialized services and intensive operation.

Questions to answer before requesting a quotation

Before selecting an ambulance, determine:

  • Will the unit be used for patient transport or emergency care?
  • What clinical function must it perform?
  • How many people will normally travel onboard?
  • What medical equipment must be installed?
  • Will it operate mainly in a city, on highways or in remote areas?
  • How many hours per day will it remain in service?
  • Are there height, length or parking restrictions?
  • Will it become part of an existing fleet?
  • Which platform can be maintained most easily?
  • What level of customization and institutional branding is required?

These answers make it possible to define the operation first and select the vehicle afterward.

Regulatory compliance in Mexico

Selecting a Type I or Type II platform does not by itself guarantee regulatory compliance.

The ambulance must be designed and equipped according to its intended medical service and the applicable provisions of NOM-034-SSA3-2013, along with any other requirements relevant to its operation.

The standard applies to public, social and private providers that use ambulances for patient transportation, emergency care or the transportation of critically ill patients.

The project should therefore begin by defining the required level of care rather than simply choosing a chassis.

An ambulance should be designed around its operation

The best ambulance is the one that can perform its medical function, operate efficiently on its planned routes, receive proper maintenance and remain available throughout its service life.

A Type I may be the right solution for critical operations requiring additional space and capacity. A Type II may provide a better balance for urban service, frequent transport, hospitals, clinics and industrial operations.
